Democracy Playbook is a cross-border journalism collaboration from Unbias the News highlighting successful strategies to resist democratic decline.
We work with local reporters from across the globe to reveal victories – big and small, past and present – in the battle for democracy and human rights. These are stories of the tactics that worked. Sharing them across the globe, we believe they can keep making a difference.
The independent media has done a good job of exposing the “authoritarian playbook” of strategies oppressive forces use to capture institutions, demonize minorities, deny free expression and undermine the rule of law.
Democracy Playbook maps responses to these threats, through rigorous, context-rich reporting on the movements fighting for free speech, climate protection and independent judiciary.
Too often, these stories are told in terms of public disturbance and disruptions to the “normal” functioning of society. We asked: What if they were reported as narratives in an ongoing story of global resistance to authoritarianism? Reporters around the world answered with stories that will be published throughout 2025.
